Hot Yoga Nutrition Guide

Nutrition – Hot Yoga

Nutrition and a healthy diet are crucial while practicing Hot yoga. Here are some facts regarding the positive benefits of Hot Yoga and some drawbacks the practice might have on the body. However, these drawbacks can be fixed with nutrition and dietary intervention.

Sweat – What is being lost?

Sweat contains primarily water. It also contains minerals, as well as lactate and urea. Mineral composition will vary with the individual, along with the source of sweating (exercise, sauna, etc.), the duration of sweating, and the composition of minerals in the body.

Minerals in sweat = sodium 2 grams/liter, potassium 1 gram/liter, calcium 0.015 gram/liter, magnesium 0.0013 gram/liter. Also many other trace elements are excreted in sweat: zinc (0.4 mg/l), copper (0.3 – 0.8 mg/l), iron (1 mg/l), chromium (0.1 mg/l), nickel (0.05 mg/l), and lead (0.05 mg/l).

One of the most important elements lost in sweat is calcium. The average calcium lost in sweat varies from 90mg to 100 mg for every 90 minutes of exercise. Taking several Bikram classes day after day can take a toll on the calcium levels in the blood and inside of the bones. The recommended daily allowance of calcium is 1500-2000 mg a day based on exercise induced sweat loss. Taking a multivitamin and/or a daily calcium supplement can help keep calcium levels balanced while also preventing osteoporosis in the future.

Benefits of Hot Yoga

There are several benefits that Hot Yoga techniques have on the body. Research shows that Bikram has a positive effect on relieving and preventing medical conditions such as:

· Hypertension (high blood pressure)

· Heart disease

· Asthma

· Diabetes

· Arthritis

· Carpal Tunnel

· Bowel diseases (Crohn’s, Ulcerative Colitis, IBS)

  1. Easing the symptoms of back pain and nerve damage
  2. Increasing motor variability for both adults and adolescents
  3. Improving balance and stability
  4. Improving leg muscle control

Hot yoga is not for everyone. The room is extremely hot and humid and may take some time getting used to. Dr. Robert Gotlin, director of orthopedic and sports rehabilitation at the Beth Israel Medical Center said, “Heat increases one’s metabolic rate, and by warming you up, it allows you to stretch more, but once you stretch a muscle beyond 20 or 25 percent of its resting length, you begin to damage a muscle.” Therefore, take caution while performing each posture to make sure you do not over-do it. Take one step at a time, and on the second set of each posture, stretch a little more than before.

My advice for everyone who is taking Hot Yoga seriously should make sure they are eating a well-balanced diet.

3-5 servings of fruit a day

3-5 servings of vegetables a day

3 servings of milk/cheese a day (Low-fat or fat-free)

Whole grain/whole wheat foods

6 glasses of water a day

Fiber rich foods

Limit sugary, refined foods (sodas, white bread, white rice, chips, starches, etc.)

Enjoy your favorite foods in moderation

Portion control

Antioxidant fruits (blueberries, plums, red grapes, strawberries, blackberries)

-To prevent aging and cell deterioration induced by sweat loss

Add a multivitamin daily

Hope everyone has taken good use of this information. Good luck to all!

Eat right and Stay Healthy.

Hot Yoga is a series of postures practiced in a heated room. The series works to stretch, strengthen and tone the muscles while detoxifying the body and calming the mind.

While each of our instructors brings their own unique experience and style to their teaching, all classes follow a basic structure that is fundamental to the Be Yoga practice…

BE Yoga Foundation Class overview:

In breath, we begin. We start a challenging practice in relaxation, allowing our expectations to fall away and be replaced by the potential for pure experience.

Intention setting. In any activity setting goals or intentions breeds accomplishment. Often a teacher will set a theme for a class – for example being more aware of your breath, or building the core muscles of the abdomen. Especially for those with a busy life, this brings the experience of a hot yoga class into focus.

The standing series is a cardiovascular set of postures. The focus is on building strength, balance and endurance through hot yoga postures done from a standing position. Postures are held anywhere from 10 seconds to a minute, allowing the skin to sweat and detoxify the body.

The floor series works on strengthening the upper body, spine and abdominal muscles. Having thoroughly warmed the body in the standing series, we now begin to open the hips and spine. The floor series relieves tension, treats lower back and knee pain and improves posture.

Final Savasana ends the class: lying flat on the back. The standing and floor series have warmed and opened the body, and now it is ready to relax. At the end of class students leave at their own pace, each with greatly reduced stress levels, a rejuvenated internal system and a little yoga twinkle in the eye (you’ll see!).

2011 Manifesto + Our Soul Essence

This is something I wrote over breakfast this morning, while pondering the complexity of how to deepen and grow in relationships for the year to come.  Life is appraised and valued by the richness and depth of our relationships. Useful knowledge therefore is simply the understanding of the way in which one thing relates to another and why.

In seems starting with “I am enough, You are enough,” is a marvelous place to begin.

It is in our very essence that we find we are love beings. The core of our beingness is love. Anything that is non-love is not us, but something that was picked-up along the endlessly winding journey of life and is something we are inadvertently holding on to.  There is no purpose in trying to “be good,” for we are born of goodness as our very nature.

To find the Great “I am,” is to find the goodness that was there all the while.

Nevertheless, along the way, the walls that we build to numb the fear, pain, and shame of not being enough end up numbing our happiness, gratitude, and everything else that is joyous. It is impossible to just numb out the “bad stuff.”

It is when we realize that not all things in life can be measured and controlled, that we are free.  The illusion that there is somehow certainty in the next second is the vacuum that devourer our dreams and cause us to be sold short.  When we stare out into the vast abyss of time, we find the is there is always choice: take a leap-of-faith or be pushed…we are all litterally standing on the edge of enlightenment.  We are vulnerable.  Naked.   Can we trust and not just believe in something beyond of ourselves enough to bring the walls down and take a risk on Life?

“To love is to risk not being loved in return.

To hope is to risk pain.

To try is to risk failure.

To laugh is to risk appearing the fool.

To weep is to risk being sentimental,

but risk must be taken, because the greatest hazard in life is to risk nothing.”

This makes us beautiful. It takes courage to be vulnerable and share ourselves, our story wholehearted, understanding, “I am enough.” “You are enough.” And thus dispelling the greatest lie of all the ages, “That I/we are unworthy to be loved.”  The story of the human race is the story of us selling ourselves short. But the story is not over [we are the authors!], we can flip the Script this Year and Change it!  And thrive in the fullness of our family, our purpose, our talents/passion.

The feeling of vulnerability, is really the feeling of being free. We find that love is much stronger and profitable than any wall and in truth is the only thing that can offer any protection.  The only thing that is eternal is the love we give and the love we receive. As we walk steadfast in love, we come see the grand magnum opus of the cosmos…that we are operating in force stronger than the whole of natural and universal law combined.  As the walls come down, our true beauty is unveiled and the way in which we can connect and relate to one another is transformed.

Namaste, ~Jt
